Dexter Flowers is located in downtown Dexter. In 2008, Theresa Whitley, bought the shop where she has been a floral artist for many years. Theresa is delighted to be a small business owner. Theresa has always felt at home in Dexter and especially at Dexter Flowers.
Theresa has been working with flowers just about all of her life in one capacity or another. She fell in love with colorful petals and floral fragrance in her grandmother’s garden at the tender age of four.
“It’s what makes me tick,” she says. “I’ve always arranged flowers … I started working professionally at another flower shop in Dexter when I was just 13.”
Whitley went off to study commercial floriculture at Michigan State University after graduating from Dexter High School. Upon receiving her degree, she went to work for Birmingham based Silk and Morgan – now known as Blossoms. She spent a decade at the exclusive, award-winning company as a design manager. In working at Silk and Morgan, and through her own private company, Whitley has become accustomed to scheduled floral arrangements for weddings and funerals.
Being around the flowers and taking them in with her senses is refreshing and comforting; Teresa is much more interested in the artistic side … creating the arrangement. Her goal is to keep the customers coming back and keep each arrangement new. “We believe that everything needs to be extraordinarily fresh,” Whitley said. “we try to worry about the freshness going all the way back to the cooler.”
“Before any holiday we are completely stocked, stuffed full, but it usually slows down in the summer,” Whitley said. “We always keep roses of every color, Alstroe Mereia, Snapdragon, Flowering Kale, Protea, Birds of Paradise, Oriental Lillies and seasonal tulips (to give people a sense of warmth even in the dead of winter).”
Whitley says she loves and is passionate about what she and the Dexter Flowers staff is doing, and encourages people to think of them more as artists.
